About weight loss surgery

What is weight loss surgery?

Weight loss surgery involves modifying the size of the stomach to help reduce health risks and improve long-term outcomes. It does not refer to cosmetic procedures like liposuction. This type of surgery is intended for individuals with severe obesity who have been unable to achieve meaningful weight loss through nonsurgical approaches. Candidates for the procedure must be strongly motivated and fully committed to following postoperative dietary guidelines, exercise plans, and regular follow-up appointments. Weight loss surgery is not a quick fix for weight loss. It should be understood as a medical intervention aimed at preserving health and extending life.

Key Considerations in Weight Loss Surgery

It is a misconception that surgery alone guarantees lasting weight loss, prevents weight regain, or resolves conditions such as diabetes. What truly matters is the patient’s ongoing commitment to lifestyle changes. Post-surgery nutrition, physical activity, and emotional well-being are just as important as the procedure itself. While effective weight loss care relies on a team-based approach, patients must recognize that they play a central role within that team.

How Weight Loss Surgery Works

At our hospital, weight loss procedures are typically performed using minimally invasive laparoscopic techniques. All surgical methods aim to reduce stomach capacity. With a smaller stomach, patients can feel full after consuming smaller amounts of food, a principle known as restriction. In some procedures, stomach reduction is combined with rerouting a portion of the small intestine. Because nutrients are absorbed when food mixes with digestive fluids in the small intestine, bypassing part of this area limits calorie and nutrient absorption known as malabsorption.

Each surgical technique differs in terms of expected weight loss, impact on obesity-related conditions like diabetes, and postoperative considerations. We work closely with each patient to determine the most suitable approach based on their individual needs.
